This is an easy no yeast or proofing required four ingredient bread, which is great to tear and share. It also goes well with a nice bowl of soup.
- 3 cups of all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- 1 tablespoon of sea salt, or you can use 2 & 1/4 teaspoons of table salt
- 1 & 1/2 cups of buttermilk (or see tip below for substitution)
Now Lets Cook
Making the Dough
Mix the flour, baking soda, and salt together in a large bowl.
Add in the buttermilk or below substitute, and using a wooden spoon, stir until it all comes together to form a ball.
Baking the Bread
Preheat the oven to 450F, cover a pan sheet with parchment paper, and flour lightly.
Turn the bread mixture on to the floured pan sheet, and shape it into a ball. Be careful not to overwork the dough as it will make the bread heavy and doughy inside.
Make a cross slit on the top of the dough about an inch deep (see picture below), and dust with flour.
Place in the preheated oven for around 35 minutes, baking until the bread is golden brown.
Tip: Substitution for buttermilk (makes 1 cup).
Place 1 tablespoon of vinegar or 1 tablespoon of lemon juice in a cup, fill the cup with milk and mix. Let sit for a few minutes before using.
